Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah

Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is a blessed act of worship through which Muslims seek the pleasure and blessings of Allah Almighty.

The main steps of Umrah are Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq or Qasr.

1. Entering Ihram and Making the Intention

Before reaching the Miqat, pilgrims prepare themselves for Ihram. Men wear two pieces of white, unstitched clothing, while women wear modest and appropriate clothing.

After making the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah, pilgrims recite the Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk.”

Pilgrims must observe all the rules and restrictions of Ihram until the Umrah is completed.

2. Performing Tawaf

After arriving in Makkah, pilgrims proceed to Masjid al-Haram to perform Tawaf around the Holy Kaaba.

• Tawaf begins from the direction of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
• Pilgrims complete seven rounds around the Kaaba.
• During Tawaf, pilgrims may recite duas, dhikr, Durood, and verses from the Holy Quran.
• After completing Tawaf, two Rak'ahs of prayer may be offered, followed by drinking Zamzam water.

3. Performing Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa'i between the hills of Safa and Marwah.

• Sa'i begins at Safa.
• Walking from Safa to Marwah counts as one round.
• Returning from Marwah to Safa counts as the second round.
• A total of seven rounds are completed.
• The seventh round ends at Marwah.
• Men walk faster between the designated green markers, while women walk at their normal pace.

4. Halq or Qasr

After completing Sa'i, pilgrims perform Halq or Qasr.

For Men: The head may be completely shaved (Halq) or the hair may be shortened (Qasr).

For Women: A small portion of the hair is cut from the ends.

After Halq or Qasr, the Umrah is completed and the restrictions of Ihram come to an end.
